How to Create SEO-Friendly URL Slugs
A URL slug is the readable part of a web address that often follows the domain. A descriptive, stable slug helps people understand the destination, but changing URLs unnecessarily can create redirects and maintenance work without improving the page itself.

1. Make the URL descriptive
Use a few meaningful words that reflect the page topic. Keep it understandable to people and avoid vague IDs where a readable path would be more useful. A URL does not need to repeat every keyword or the entire page title.
2. Use a consistent format
Many sites use lowercase words separated by hyphens. Avoid unnecessary parameters, repeated separators, and dates that will quickly become outdated unless they serve a real purpose. Consistency across a site matters more than any one formatting preference.
3. Keep URLs concise without removing meaning
Shorter is not automatically better. Remove filler when the meaning remains clear, but do not make a slug cryptic just to reduce its length. Make sure the page content and URL continue to describe the same subject.
4. Plan changes to existing URLs
Do not change a well-established URL solely for a small SEO preference. If a change is necessary, implement a direct permanent redirect from the old URL to the closest relevant new page, update internal links and canonical tags, and revise the sitemap.
5. Check for duplicates and broken paths
Before publishing, check that the slug does not conflict with an existing page and that the final URL resolves correctly. Test trailing slash conventions and verify that internal links use the preferred URL format.
